Professional development is an efficient process that strengthens
the knowledge, skills and perspective among the professional staff as well as
increasing their capability – the systematic implementation thereof that will
help the organization or the staff itself. (Centre of disease control and
prevention,2017). It helps to build self-confidence, ensure a safe workplace
and maintain morale of staff members. It can analyze the bond of
professionalism. The components of professional development are behavioral development,
attitudinal development and intellectual development ( Mitchell, 2013). Why is
it important? As the saying goes “Learning
is what most adults do for a living in 21st century” – Alfred Edward
Perlman. To earn a living, knowledge and skills are the most powerful

What
is a professional? We usually envision a professional as someone in the
corporate world, wearing a suit and tie with a briefcase. Yes that is what I
imagine too. It is not wrong. The word professional came from the word profession. As we know a profession is a
job a person is doing to earn a living. In order for them to be professional
they need to develop and became an expert in their field. A professional is a
person who is qualified, skillful, knowledgeable and highly competent in their
specific field. They are people who are earning money by doing this job
according to speciality. In nursing, professional described as a person who is
recognized by the board and organization through the nursing practice and
education credentialing agencies. Professionalism is a vital combination of a
few aspects in nursing that can identify or mark a profession or a professional
and it requires knowledge, an intensive academic preparation along with good
conduct and ethics and at the same time integrity (Porcupile,2017).

Nursing
consist of the largest sector among health workers around the world and have
become the fastest growing profession. The nursing profession requires well trained,
versatile, knowledgeable and flexible individuals who can be groomed by means
of professional development. (Perry ,2014). It’s a mandatory requirement that
plays a big role to help maintain the standard and stay
abreast within the profession. According to Florence Nightingale, ” Let us never consider
ourselves finished nurses, we must be learning all of our lives.” Her statement implies that innovation in
nursing opens an opportunity for us to learn and grow in this profession. Part
of this innovation is being a leader. As a described in the 2016 Nursing
Professional Development (NPD): Scope and Standards of Practice, effective
leadership is integral to the roles and responsibilities required of NPD
practitioners today and into the future (Harper and Maloney ,2016).

In
Saudi Arabia, the quality of nursing care still needs improvement. In the daily
practice, there is very little supervision of the present and new staff.
Therefore many nursing and medical incidents and errors are being reported. It increases
the workload of the staff as well as them needing to be away from the patient
to write the incident report. The errors caused damage and abused the patient
beside cost the money.(Mutair AA,2015). The pronunciation of words might be
different because of origins, generational differences and up bringing but it
brings out the same meaning therefore it causes misunderstanding and conflicts.
Communication and teamwork are the indicators that can measure the ability of
the nurse and it will improve the outcome in quality and safe patient care (Liao
et al., 2015) excellent communication can develop an effective teamwork that
will ensure patient safety and quality care moreover satisfaction not only to
patient but also among the healthcare practitioners.

COMMUNICATION
is a form of transmitting information which involves two parties or more. In
order to carry out the task and give good quality care, the instructions and
direction between healthcare practitioners as well with patients must first be
understood. (Communication in Nursing, 2015).
Furthermore, with the rise of multinational healthcare practitioners in the
Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, the language barrier is the most challenging.
Therefore, a universal language and understanding of the different culture and
values must be established in the working area. English and Arabic language are
the languages of choice here. There was a research done by  Almutairi,
(2015) concluded that education and orientation programs must be conducted for
all the new staff in order to improve the understanding of the culture, social
norms and language. In Saudi Arabia there is no other religion other than
Islam, therefore their beliefs are based on the Quran and Sunna are state that
sickness comes from Allah and it is a way to atone from sin. With these
environmental and strong belief systems they do not see sickness as being a
result of poor health practices. In addition, it is also a challenge to educate
them. The language and communication is a tool to share information between
health practitioner and patient as well as among healthcare itself (Albougami,
2015)

Excellent
communication skills are very important to be an outstanding nurse. This ability
helps to build strong relationships, gain trust and prevent errors. The communication
process involves the sender, receiver and the message. According Kourkouta and
Papathanasiou (2014)to have effective communication between the nurse and
patient as well as among healthcare workers,  it should involve not only understanding but
empathy, experiences, knowledge, sincerity as well as how the message is
received and delivered. Above all, listening is most important and essential.
Without good listening skills it’s very difficult to understand, to deliver and
to communicate.(McDuffee,2014). The message can be delivered by verbal, nonverbal,
written or electronic and each has its advantages (Blinn
and Noble, 2015). For example, with regard to the nurse patient relationship,
the patient gestures can tell the nurse if the patient is in pain. Thus, speaking
and listening as verbal components are not the only the key to achieve
communication but also observation and acknowledgement as nonverbal components
play a part. According to a study done by CRISCO in an article written by
Bailey (2016), it was stated that 30 percent of the mistakes in malpractice
happened as a result of poor communication leading to 1744 cases of death. This
was supported by another study done by Joint Commission in 2012-2014, which
disclosed that communication is one of the top three issues leading to sentinel
events. The awareness of how important communication is needs to be addressed
for them to be more confident and competent (Bramhall, 2014).Good communication
can benefit both parties either patient or healthcare practitioner. Barriers in
communication need to be identified in order to be improved in nursing care.
Communication barriers such as attitude, noise, lack of time, distractions, speaking
too fast, anxiety, lack of privacy, volume of voice and language problems, lead
to misunderstanding, disappointment, anger and demoralization (Ali M 2017). In
order to overcome these barriers in communication, spend some time with the patient
and establish a good relationship in privacy. This will not only reduced
anxiety but also help them to express their emotions (Brown,2017). Avoid using
slang, speak slowly and clearly (Bush,2016). Nevertheless, healthcare
practitioners such as nurses are usually being blamed for the miscommunication which
contributes to errors. To overcome this problem and make endorsement more
efficient, save time and ensure all pertinent information is conveyed, a few
tools have been designed, for example; ISBAR, I-PASS and TeamStepp. These tools
not only help to improve communication but help the team members to work
efficiently which ensures patient safety.
