Over the last few decades, the act of binge drinking in teens has increased a significant amount. As this problem continues to grow within society the dangers of this lethal drug continue to spur in the air. Likewise, The dangers of binge drinking and alcoholism in adolescence could potentially lead to long-term health problems.”Drinking is more closely related to lack of success than to achievement” (Dunayer 2014). In the long run knowledge and education about how alcohols dangerous effects on the human body can potentially prevent these physical effects, long-term effects, and overall better mental health if one avoids alcohol consumption in the teenage years. Alcohol’s effects all parts of the body including the brain and liver. These organs are the most affected organs due to alcohol consumption during the teenage years. Focusing mainly on the brain, taking part in drinking in the adolescent years can have a major effect on one’s health. Teens have a difficult time and cannot handle alcohol the same way adults can due to the fact that brain development is still occurring and occurs until mid 20’s and earlier 30’s for some individuals.  As Intoxication is how the liver detoxifies alcohol, once the liver cannot keep up with the alcohol that is being consumed it circulates throughout the bloodstream and brain and eventually leads to an individual becoming intoxicated. Parts of the brain that can be affected by alcohol consumption include the hippocampus and the prefrontal lobe. The hippocampus is mainly responsible for memory “Studies of adolescents show that heavy and extended alcohol use is associated with a 10% reduction in the size of the hippocampus.” (n.d.) The prefrontal lobe is another crucial part of the brain that is affected by alcohol consumption it is important for planning, judgement, decision making, impulse control and language. These areas of the brain are altered the most when people are young with the consumption of alcohol. As alcohol consumption is looked at as an addictive drug there are many more harmful things teens can be doing. In addition, alcohols long-term effects are greater than it’s short-term effects. Some of these effects include; problem-solving skills and school performance, mental health, potentially affecting the body.”Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21.”.(n.d.) Alcohol in copious amounts has shown that it can weaken the immune system, ultimately making it easier for viral and bacteria to adhere in the body. In some acute cases alcohol can cause severe damage to the brain this is known as,  Alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). ARBD is a brain disorder that is caused by the consumption of alcohol on a regular basis with heavy amounts alcohol over a time period of several years. This disorder can potentially share similar symptoms of dementia but is not a form of it. People with ARBD who receive good support and remain alcohol-free make a full or partial recovery. In addition, there is a good possibility that their condition will not worsen. Furthermore, being a cautious drinker is important because alcohols long-term effects can be detrimental to one’s health. Along with physical problems the body alcohol can also have mental problems on one’s health. Alcohol is also known as a depressant; meaning that it ultimately slows down the central nervous system this can lead to blockage of messages to the brain which can potentially alter a person’s, perceptions, emotions, movement, vision, and hearing. The dependence of alcohol at a young age can lead to many things including depression, aggression and in some rare cases suicide. AS people sometimes use alcohol as an award system people tend to become alcoholics the people with this mentality. In conclusion, as alcohol is seen in many teens eyes as a fun way to let loose; it can also lead to many harmful and detrimental problems in the long run. In addition, as the physical and mental health problems, alcohol causes can be detrimental outweighs the benefits of alcohol. Making it a terrible substance to consume while in your adolescent years.
