choose this article because in class we had talked about burnout. Right now I
work as a direct support professional at Integrated Life Choices so I thought
it would be interesting to learn about the burnout of direct support workers.
Along with burnout this article talked about prosocial motivation and stress.
The article collected data about the effects of stress on
burnout by having direct support workers taking a survey. Exploring the role of
prosocial motivation of stress and burnout in the role of the direct support
worker is the major objective. Resulting in “Prosocial motivation significantly
moderated the association of emotional exhaustion (EE) and role boundary stress
with depersonalization (DP),” (Hickey, R. 2014). Direct support workers help with outcomes of individuals, with
playing this role it can lead to high turnover rates and bad services.
The methods used included: design,
participants, and procedures. Design was used to “test the moderating effects
of prosocial motivation on the association between stress and burnout” (Hickey,
R. 2014). There were participants from sixteen agencies that participated in
this survey, from these agencies 1570 completed the form that ranged from
full-time and part-time. The procedure to get the survey out was the managers
and direct support employees distributed them.
The survey was measured out along
gender, educational attainment and tenure. There were two purposes of this
“First, we sought out to understand the direct
effects of occupational stress on burnout, controlling for a range of personal
and work-related factors. Second, by introducing the concept of prosocial
motivation into the study of stress and burnout, we tested the potential
moderating effects of this positive characteristic of the direct support
workforce.” (Hickey, R. 2014)
The results came up as that the
relationships between direct support works and people that they support is a
leading impact on stress and burnout in the direct support profession.
What surprised me most was that, “direct support
workers in this study reported relatively low levels of burnout compared with
other human service sectors.” This is because I know how it feels in this
profession to feel burnout. Reading all the tables was the most difficult thing
about the article. There is a lot of information that the article collected. I
see this information being helpful in the future for me because it talks about
the relations of prosocial motivation, stress, and burnout amongst direct
support workers. All these relate to the field I am in now as a direct support
professional. With working so much I feel stressed and burnout a lot, but now
that I’ve looked at this article it shows me that I am not the only one. There
are many people who feel this way. This article is related to class because
during class we have talked about burnout.
