In this chapter,
I would like to initiate an in-depth discussion on the relationship between the
emergence of films the significance they have on contemporary society and our
way of thinking.  The connection between
simulations, hyperrealism, spectacles and the culture industry will be
contemplated throughout this chapter. And the underlying question raised
throughout the literature review which is how are movies considered to be a
medium of mass communication? – when movies portray realities but also
fictionalise trends in society.

Despite the
reality we live in today, society are comfortable with creating fictional
realities within their minds to escape from the actual truth. One of the most
common examples of mind control in our society is the usage of televised media
that effectively has mass communicated propaganda extensively throughout the
years. This form of mind control is rather successful as we like being
entertained therefore the media combine the information they choose to share
through modes of digital media. The art of filmmaking based in science fiction
movies have conceptualised a future more progressive. Science fiction is full
of dystopian scenarios, the future is anything but unknown, In the end our
minds are already dispensed to accept living in a society where everything
broadcasted by the mass media is the norm and is absolute.

There are
movies right now that support the nature of worldwide conspiracies and make
people aware of the issue that take place. Hollywood will continue to startle
us with films that we can ideally relate to such as cultures, civilisations,
crimes and the political, and try to educate by implicitly using metaphorical
and visual imagery to deliver a message, of ways in which we can preserve and
protect the world. In my opinion, the Sci -fi genre tends to encourage
environmental appreciation, by treating these technologies as a certainty
rather than a possibility.  Sci- fi gives
humanity a false sense of security as we are assured that when catastrophic
events occur we will invent, engineer or either think our way out of the issue.

Ironically popular Sci- fi films often shed hope and positivity in ways we can
appreciate our planet, albeit potentially demonstrating apocalyptic themes and
darkness if were to cause destruction, to coerce a better future for ourselves.

I attempted
to observe how visionaries, intellectuals and theorists have foreshadowed sci-fi
films for example Adorno and Horkheimers critical theory on the Culture
industry where real life has been “absorbed by the movies” Adorno, T. &
Horkheimer, M. (1944).and other products of the entertainment industry. Guy
Debord blurring of appearance and reality through an accumulation of spectacles
which is best described in movies I have analysed: The Matrix and The Truman
Show essentially Debords ideas describe the way we live now. The images we
stare at, that serves to reproduce the modes of society. The cinematic
experience involved in simulations that challenge the real with the hyppereal.

Among the symbolisms and significations based in postmodern society, examined
by Jean Baudillard and Umberto Eco.
