as stated earlier on is a peculiar form of advancement in customs, arts,
beliefs associated with a group of people. Culture is the characteristic of a
family and is what draws and binds them together in challenging times. Hotel
Rwanda is a historical movie that depicted how family values and culture
influenced a man to risk his life to save a group of people from a different
ethnic group.  The genocide in Rwanda was
a result of ethnic disunity between the Hutus and Tutsis ended with almost a
million people dead. Paul Rusesabagina stood out as hero holding onto his
cultural belief during the civil war that ethnicity does not make one superior
over the other.

            The Rusesabagina’s family level of functional competency
as shown in the film is exceptional. This is because Paul took it upon himself to
risk his life and that of his family by hiding the Tutsis who were being murdered
by the Hutus. His tactics worked out perfectly in bribing army generals that
provided him food and security.  Paul Rusesabagina
is very competent because he placed his family’s value first by risking his
life to save his family during the war. Paul Rusesabagina also upheld his cultural
values by extending his care to his neighbors, the Tutsis when they were being
murdered. He provided shelter and food to more than thousand Tutsis.  Paul Rusesabagina’s wife Tatiana also upheld
her family’s value by supporting her husband to save their neighbors.

Assessment
of Development or Functional Competency

            Paul Rusesabagina’s role as a hotel manager portrays family
values of loyalty, ego, integrity, responsibility, and accountability. He was
loyal and respected his hotel and run as it should be. During the genocide, his
role changes from being a mere hotel manager to being accountable to his
people.  Paul’s responsibility expanded from
being a father and a hotel manager to being a community leader and a hero. We
can also assess how the families adapted to condition not familiar to them
during the genocide in order to survive.  Rwandans also practiced both indigenous and
western form of health care. The country had many health centers that were
built by churches yet the people still consulted their indigenous healers to cure
their illnesses.   

            Socio cultural aspect of the movie deals with the
lifestyle. Food and alcohol is shared at frequent ceremonial activities held
together by all the ethnic groups. Rusesabagina was able to use food and
alcohol to bribe people to protect his family which was gladly accepted even
though they were not from the same ethnic groups.  Among these three ethnic groups is a trait of
power and decision making. Culturally, there is a head of the group in the
local community that settles disputes and maintains order. Royal power among
the groups made it a challenge for a person to rise as a Political head to rule
them as a country. Members of the other ethnic group not in power plots to
overthrow the ruling ethnic group member.  Tilling and farming was also custom that
influence the ethnic groups. People, who owned lands occupy it with their
families and is inherited by their children.  Family dynamics in the movie is seen as a
custom for male children inherit their father’s acquisition and being
responsible for the rest of the family. Mothers play a primary role of caring
for their children and their maternal uncles plays a role in the moral
development of the children.

            The family’s culture as depicted in Rusesabagina’s family
did not only include the Rwandans but their neighboring countries who share the
Kinyarwanda dialect. History had it that the Twa were the original settlers of
Rwanda. They were joined by the Hutus who came from the west and the Tutsis followed
from the northeast. These three ethnic groups shared a culture and were able to
settle as a nation. They shared a language, Kinyarwanda and also shared a religion.  In the movie this can be seen in how
Rusesabagina, a Hutu and his wife Tatiana, a Tutsi lived in harmony as a husband
and wife without any form of conflict that they both had to compromise.  

Assessment
of Culture and Ethnic Traits

The
main ethnic groups in Rwanda are the Tutsi and Hutu. Political corruption
erupted tensions among these two ethnic groups. Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu is the
manager of the Belgium hotel and is his wife Tatiana is a Tutsi. Rwandan
political condition deteriorated after the fall of the President. Rusesabagina
and his family witnessed how his neighbors were murdered through ethnic
cleansing (Sragow, 2005). In the early part of the genocide, Rusesabagina
bribed some influential people to protect his family with alcohol and money. Rusesabagina
distracts the Hutu rebels and sneaks his family and neighbors into his hotel.

            Hotel Rwanda is historical movie that was released in 2004
based on the Rwandan genocide.  The movie
starred Don Cheadle as the hotel manager, Paul Rusesabagina and Sophie Okenedo
and his wife Tatiana (Anthere, 2005). The Rwandan genocide, which occurred sometime
in the spring of 1994, is documented in the film by showing Rusesabagina rescuing
his family members and a thousand refugees by offering them shelter in his
Hotel. (Sragow, 2005).  Terry George
directed the movie. The movie explores  ethnic cleansing and violence that erupted into
a civil war.  This violence occurred in Rwanda
following their independence. The film also documents family values, ethical identification,
culture and functional competence.

Description
of Movie Family

            Culture is a peculiar form of life that includes customs,
value, and belief system of a group of people at a given time. Also, culture encompass
what is considered wrong or acceptable (N’dri, 2016).  Culture is essential because it defines a person
in various ways. Identifying oneself with a culture provides a sense of
belonging, purpose, and identity. Cultures are passed on from generation to
generations have been sustained for many years . Cultures are unique to the
people who identifies with them and that influence their beliefs, roles,
activities, and habits. Culture that is common among people in different
societies’ offers an opportunity for them to share and connect to each other.  This paper evaluates how culture defined the
families and their developmental competency in the movie, Hotel Rwanda.
