Abstract:China and reports. And then this thesis will analyze

Abstract:China is rising, and Chinese government is beginning to pay much attention to build its national image abroad. According to researches, in recent years, China’s national image abroad has been improving. However, compared with western countries, China has lacked the publicizing for its traditional culture and core values, so China has not built its national image very well. Therefore, it is important to export Chinese traditional culture to build a remarkable national image.Key Words: The rising of China; China’s national image abroad; Chinese culture Introduction:China is becoming a superpower, and this thesis will analyze and discuss the implication of China’s rapid economy and rising international status for its national image to the international community by analyzing some reliable and authoritative surveys and reports. And then this thesis will analyze the impact posed by foreign governments or media on China’s national image abroad. Finally, this thesis will give opinions on the topic how to improve China’s national image abroad.  Main Body:Nowadays, China has played an essential role in many major international conferences and global governance. Since Chinese economy reform and opening, China has completed a series of notable changes which have made China becomingthe third largest economy in the world. According to National Bureau of Statics of China (2016), in 2015, the GDP of China was 68905.21 billion, and the growth rate of China’s GDP was 6.9%. It demonstrated that China’s growing economic strength has sufficient potential to make China becoming a superpower in the future. With the increasing of comprehensive strength of China, Chinese government has gradually begun to pay attention to China’s national image abroad. According to a report (HongRui Zhang, 2015), it has surveyed 9500 respondents around the world, and most of respondents living abroad (43%) have used some words, historic and charm, to describe China’s national image. Besides, most respondents (64%) have considerable expectation on China in promoting global economic development by its rapid growth economy. According to this report, we can know that most of respondents living abroad havebasic impression on Chinese history and cultures. In addition, respondents commonly have approved the achievement on economy of China. But there was an essential question that we should know was what channels for respondents living abroad to know about China?   In the report (China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, 2016), it surveyed around 9000 respondents, and the three major channels to know about China were local traditional media (61%), local media (51%), and using Chinese products (35%). Surprisingly, only 30% of respondents in total who knew about China from local Chinese media, and only 23% of respondents who have ever been to China. So, most of respondents know about China from local media instead of local Chinese media. This report has proved Chinese government and media have lacked a strong propaganda for its national ‘s image.    However, western countries have maintained a vigilant heart for the building of China’s national image. On the one hand, some of western countries have promotedChina threat theory which has affected the building of China’s national image abroad. The British international institute for strategic studies has published The Military Balance 2015 in 2016. The report has analyzed the military expenditure of most of counties, and it has declared that the military expenditure of China has been increasing, but that in western countries have been decreasing in recent years. Many western countries have published a lot of similar reports to give impression to people that China has powerful military strength which would pose a threat on western capitalism countries. By propagandizing the military power of China, western countries could have more reasons to curb the rising of China and increase the military expenditure. At the same time, people living in western countries would have negative impression to China’s national image, and they would feel scared for the rising of China. Government in western countries would make use of people’s negative impression toward China to implement some strategies to curb the development of China. On the other hand, western media have preferred to report negative news about China. From the report (HongRui Zhang, 2015), we can know people living in developing countries have given higher marks on China’s national image than people living in developed countries. Under the influence of the media, People living in developed countries would more likely to believe that China has many social problems need to solve including severe corruption in the ruling party, environmental problems, the transformation for economic structure and the gap between poor and rich. Western media have attempted to cover up the achievement of China by reporting the social problems of China. In this way, the positive image of China offered by Chinese media has been difficult to gain international recognition for lack of credibility. Thence, providing more channels to know about China and giving a real national image to international community is necessary. From my perspectives, China is an ancient and civilized country, so we can make full use of the unique advantages to build China’s national image abroad. In 2004, the first Confucius institute was established in Seoul South Korea, and it was a Non-profit institute which was aim to spread China’s traditional culture and provide channels for foreigners to know about China. However, in the report (China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, 2015), it has surveyed 960 respondents from eight different countries, and there was only 57% of respondents on average who were in favor of the establishmen of Confucius institute. So, Confucius institute have not achieved its initial aims. In my opinion, not only Chinese media should step up publicity Confucius institute, but Confucius institute should combine the ancient traditional Chinese culture with the modern society to spread Chinese traditional culture. For example, Confucius institute can upload and released some interesting and novelty small videos and texts about China on internet to cater for the reading habits of modern people.  Furthermore, traditional festivals and costumes also should be recognized by moreforeigners. The Chinese government could organize local culture institute, media and local Chinese to hold some festivals and activities that are related to Chinese traditional culture. In these activities, organizes can promote traditional cultures that are tied with people’s daily life such as Kong Fu, Chinese embroidery, Chinese foods. By the promotion, we can give a close to life impression to people living in abroad.  Spreading Chinese traditional culture can help foreigners to restore a real China’s national image, which can also help foreigners and foreign governments to understand China’s development route and strategies. Since the 18th national congress of communist party, Chinese government has launched a series of strategies such as Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Belt and Road Initiative. These policies can export Chinese traditional cultures and development concepts to the world. Conclusion:Overall, China’s national image abroad is being improved step by step. However, China’s rising is a double edged sword for the building of its national image. On the one hand, China’s rising has laid the foundation for the building of China’s national image abroad. On the other hand, it has made western countries wary of the building of China’s national image, which has posed negative effects on the building of China’s national image. Fortunately, Chinese government is spreading Chinese traditional cultures by various strategies, which can help the building of China’s national image. This thesis mainly analyzes the implication of China’s rising on its national image abroad based on lots of data and evaluation. So, future researches can focus on analyzing major and meaningful international events and news to give a different view and direction about this topic.
